Local photograper opens his first studio...

Mount Washington resident, Jason Greiner, has over 10 years of experience as a photographer and built quite a portfolio of portraits which is his niche.  His studio, Three Rivers Creative Arts,  is located at 229 Shiloh Street above Wines and Spirits.  Jason’s rates cant be beat and have packages that start at only $30.  Pictures can be taken at his studio or on location.  Pictures make a great gift for almost any special occasion or holiday, and it is great to have this resource in our community.

Jason has also published a book titled Wishing Wells which is a collection of photographs he has taken over the years as well as his own poetry.  Soon he will be releasing his 2nd book, Shadows and Shade which looks at poetry as a way to engage people beyond typical forms of writing.

Grand Brew Cafe Makes Headlines...

toddHoward Todd of Grand Brew Cafe and Di Fiore’s Ice Cream De-lite made headlines again in this latest article from the Tribune Review.   Much is said locally about this hardworking man, but one can’t deny his passion for his businesses, or for the success of the MWCDC’s business district development efforts through the Main Street program.

With out this man’s persistence and generosity our program wouldn’t have been as sucessful as it is.  Aside from his donations of coffee and pastries for a variety of meetings, he has allowed unlimited use of his water supply to keep Shiloh Street’s planters, landscaped areas and trees alive.  Not to mention, he is always there with something cold to drink when he sees volunteers helping to keep the street looking its best.  He and his hardworking wife Patty, were also the first people to step up and invest in the renovation their storefront and open up Grand Brew, when the Main Street program began, in the hopes that other would follow suit and do the same.

If you haven’t had a chance to congratulate Todd on his  article or 1000 days straight of working without a break, stop in and get something to eat or drink and thank him for his committment to our community.

Art Marketplace and Vu+ in PopCity...

Pop City Media featured the Art Marketplace today in their weekly online newsletter and website.

You can read it in its entirety here.

Some highlights:

Mount Washington sees more than a million visitors a year. But most limit their exploration to scenic views from Grandview Avenue, then turn around and ride the Incline right back down to Station Square.

“We now have something to encourage tourists to take a few extra steps into the community,” says Greg Panza with Mount Washington Community Development Corporation (MWCDC).

The Art Marketplace has been a great success so far this summer. Make sure you come up this weekend and check out the scene. More to come about this weekends artists. Stay tuned.

PG: Artist Market enlivening Shiloh Stre...

The Post Gazette featured Shiloh Streets Art Marketplace in their City WalkAbout blog.

by Diana Nelson Jones

Mount Washington has created another draw for visitors beyond the city’s most famous view. The Shiloh Street Art Market has opened.

In its third weekend this Saturday and Sunday, it will feature singer-songwriter Cathy Stewart a mosaic artist Stevo Sadvary.

Greg Panza, program manager of the Mount Washington Community Development Corporation, has birthed and adopted this baby as a way to show off more of the neighborhood. Shiloh Street is the intimate commercial corridor off Grandview, but it has see-sawed over the years, losing its liquor store and drug store, gaining an ice cream store, losing a restaurant, gaining a restaurant, and so on.

The weekend art market is enlivening the stretch and has brought artists more than $1,000 in proceeds already. It is from noon to 5 p.m.

“Grandview Avenue welcomes over a million visitors a year from all over the globe,” Mr. Panza said, “but there has been little to engage those visitors until now.

“We did an experiment last year with two artists, and it was so successful we said we would ramp it up this year,” he said. “I posted an ad on Craig’s List and got bombarded by people wanting to sell their art.”

The market now includes six artists, different ones each day although some will be returnees, and two musical acts.

The venue offers exposure for new artists and even for old artists who don’t have hundreds of dollars lying around. The Three Rivers Arts Festival charges $1,200 for a table, and other neighborhood festivals charge hundreds.

“Ours is $20 a day,” he said.

The artists have included jewelry makers, photographers, painters and less traditional creators. One makes mobiles from glass she collects along the rivers. The prices range from $5 to over $300.

The artist featured in the photo is Stevo Sadvary (http://stevosphere.com/)

Hot Dog!...
packsdogs

Inside Packs and Dogs located on Shiloh St.

Packs and Dogs on Shiloh Street, after a brief winter break, is back open for lunch! As tempting as it was to splurge for a juicy all beef bloudhound topped with cheddar cheese and bacon, I opted for the healthier route of a veggie dog with sauerkraut and brown mustard. It definitley hit the spot. MMM MMM GOOD! Too bad I couldnt open up the fridge and purchase thatt Agave Wheat Beer from Colorado staring me in the face. Guess I’ll have to wait until the Mainstreet Volunteer Happy Hour / Beer Tasting on Thursday April 23rd fro 5-7:30pm. Hope to see you there!

J.J.’s Family Restaurant Celebrate...

J.J.'s on the corner of Shiloh St. and Virginia Ave

For 7 years J.J.’s has warmed hearts and your cup of coffee as one of the best kept diner secrets in Pittsburgh.  J.J.’s is located on the corner of Shiloh Street and Mt Washington in this classic Queen Anne building which once known as Knell’s Bakery.  The home cooking and friendly service is a favorite among locals and a real find for the adventuresome toursit looking for a slice of Pittsburgh life.

One visit and you will soon see the difference in the quality of this place compared to other diners.  This is no greasy spoon as they say.  They offer great home made items like hot meatloaf and roast turkey sandwiches.  They actually hand form their burgers and sausage! You wont find frozen links or home fries here.  Breakfast is served all day as well.

By the way, if your lucky enough to stop in after they just baked some pies, you’re in for a real treat.  They will,  however take special orders and have a complete menu of homemade pies to choose from.

Were fortunate to have this great business here in our community.  Congratulations J.J’s!
