Many new businesses will be opening in Mount Washington in the next few months. On August 11, 2010, Mount Washington welcomed it’s newest business ArtZebo Creations.
ArtZebo Creations will be officially opening their doors at 26 Southern Avenue. Stop by for a complimentary cup of coffee and say hello to Desiree. ArtZebo specializes in handmade soy candles, soaps, scented oils, and other aromatherapy products. They also will be featuring unique handmade jewelry from De Andrea Designs and the Original Glass Worx. Local photographer Jason Greiner of Three Rivers Creative Arts will be displaying some of his work along with local artist Scott Saloney and potter Vanessa Kettering. This space which was once Becky’s One Stop Shop has been transformed into a colorful retail store that is sure to please all of the senses.
Interview with the Business Owner
Q: Tell me, in short what your services are?
A: We are a collection of local artists providing the community with customizable aromatherapy/fragrance products and a variety of different types of handmade art. We work to use Earth friendly, natural, sustainable, or recycled materials; promote worthy charitable causes; and enrich the community by allowing interaction between the public and the artists.
Q: What made you go into business in Mount Washington?
A: I have lived on Mt. Washington since I finished AIP 2000. I have always loved the community here. I had a dream to open an art center to enrich the community that I love, so I started back to school for human services and studied my aromatherapy intensely on the side. I began selling candles and massage oils in March of this year from my boyfriend’s shop, JVRaschi’s Treasures at 28 Southern Avenue. Then I found the Saturday Art Marketplace and things started to pick up. People appreciate quality, natural products and my customers are very loyal. I make and love many types of art, but there wasn’t a place near-by to find the local artists besides the Saturday markets. The shop next to JVRaschi’s Treasures opened up in June and I decided to make a go of it! I gathered up some of the local artists and we had the grand opening on Wednesday, August 11.
Q: What is different about ArtZebo Creations than any other similar shops in Pittsburgh?
A: I do not know any other shop quite like ArtZebo. The art from the locals is amazing for starters, then there are the SCENTS! At this minute I can make 48 fragrance, and 34 aromatherapy blends and that list grows all the time. Of those blends I can create soy candles, Shea butter soaps, Shea butter skin sticks, sprays, oils, diffusers, sachet bags, and that list is also expanding! The focus of my products is to be as close to nature as possible so people who are sensitive can also enjoy them.
My shop is eco-friendly with returnable, refillable containers and the like. Bring it back to me and I will refill it for a discount or recycle it. A portion of supply cost is donated directly to the Life Center for Autism Foundation, and giving back to worthy causes is what we will keep working to do. I say, “Love Earth, Love Art, Love Life, Go Green!”.
Q: Do you have any promotions /events you would like to mention?
A: YES!! We want to be as eventful as possible! Some of the artists will be on site getting creative during business hours, so the public can watch the magic in process! Vincent DeAndrea of DeAndrea Designs will be in the shop when possible on Mondays. Scott Saloney will also be spending time during the week. We have an Art/Artists VIP table right in the front of the shop so there is always opportunity for action! If the table is free, any customer, better-half, or child is welcome to sit and get creative. If any artists are interested in becoming a VIP member they can contact me through any ArtZebo social network or stop in. I still have room for one or two more collections in the shop.
We are beginning to hash out plans to raise funds for the Gulf oil crisis, so stay tuned for that, please! Our beautiful Earth can use all the help we can muster.
Q: Is there anything else you would like to mention in the blog?
A: The local artists that display and sell their work in my shop are amazing aesthetic pleasers. Vincent DeAndrea of DeAndrea Designs makes precious gem and fine silver jewelry which is stunning. Scott Saloney is an accomplished mixed media artist. Dan Sullivan of Original Glass Worx creates glass art and pendant necklaces with incredible depth and color. Jason Greiner of Three Rivers Creative Arts is a fantastic photographer and poet with two published works available in my shop. We also have pieces by the super clever pottery artist Vanessa Kettering. All of these artists have work available at ArtZebo and we all love doing custom pieces, so if you can dream it we can probably create it! Just come on in and I am sure you will find something to please your senses.
This business is a direct reflection on the success of the Mount Washington Art Marketplace which attracted Desiree to the area and inspired her to take her business plan to the next level. Many of the artists displaying work at ArtZebo Creations have also participated in the market as well and welcomed the opportunity to increase their exposure in Mount Washington in a retail setting. This is something you have to see to truly experience but here is their website for a sneak preview http://www.etsy.com/shop/artzebo . Their hours of operation are M-F 10 am – 5:30 pm and also by appointment by calling 412-726-9804.

It was that time, you know the time when dark roots rear their ugly head and become noticeable to the world. Since I had been working in Mount Washington I decided to change it up a bit and patron one of the local salons. I had met Jennifer at a community meeting and decided to give her salon a shot.
When I called to make my appointment, she was extremely accommodating. A week later I was on my way to Boggs Avenue to address my hideous roots. When I walked in, I was greeted by Jennifer and her cousin who works with her conveniently named Jennifer. There was no wait so I was in the chair immediately. After a bunch of bull-gabbing and enough foil in my hair to pick up satellite television, I was getting my hair washed with the yummiest smelling shampoo. For me, like many others, getting my hair washed is like a Zen experience; all I wanted to do was fall asleep, but I was too excited to see my hair.
After my hair was cut, styled, and dried, I felt like a new woman. My highlights were perfect. Jennifer did an awesome job. The best part was that I had fun. There was no pushing to buy products or other services, just an enjoyable a relaxing few hours of salon peace and happiness.
Interview with the Business Owner
Q: Tell me, in short, what your services are?
A: We provide hairstyling services for men, women, and children. Our services include: haircuts, beard trims, color, highlights & lowlights, perms, up do’s, styling, shampoo & sets, conditioning & scalp treatments, and facial waxing.
We also sell hair products. They include: Select Aquage, Pravana, and Redken for Men.
Q: What made you go into business in Mount Washington?
A: I was a hairstylist for 8 years and was unhappy working for other salons. I like the Mount Washington Community and the fact that the residents shop locally for the products and services they need, when they can. I found the perfect location and thought I would give it a try. I’m so glad I did it.
Q: What sets your business apart from other similar business in Pittsburgh?
A: We provide high quality hair services at affordable prices. Out atmosphere is relaxed, fun, and friendly.
Q: Do you have any promotions /events you would like to mention?
A: Anyone who mentions this blog can receive 15% off of any purchase.
Q: Is there anything else you would like to mention in the blog?
A: I have been in business since 2004 and a hairstylist for 13 years. Jennifer Moran, has been a hairstylist at my salon for 1 ½ years. We work hard to make sure everyone who comes in leaves happy.
We were voted “Best Hair Salon in Mt. Washington” in 2009 and 2010 by the Trib Total Media Readers Choice Awards.
